In a wonderful display of unity, sportsmanship and camaraderie, rival professional football clubs Loyola Meralco and Kaya gave a joint clinic and then formed a team of 11 to go against 134 kids who registered to learn under, and then play against their football idols.
On October 26 at the Emperador Stadium, 54 students from the Loyola Meralco FC Academy and Kaya FC Academy joined the football clinic and exhibition match, while 80 young football players were sponsored by LBC Foundation, One Meralco Foundation, and Bootcamp, a multi-branded football store.
Kaya FC head coach David Perkovic acted as head referee for the match, and was assisted by Kaya FC manager Justin Tolentino.
Phil Younghusband of Loyola Meralco Sparks and Danilo de Jong of Kaya FC scored a goal each for the professionals, who currently play in the United Football League. They lost to the 134 kids, 2-3.
Registration fees for the event were donated to ICanServe Foundation, to promote early breast cancer detection and community-based breast cancer screening.
Kaya FC received the support of Global FC and the Philippine Azkals for “Kick Breast Cancer Goodbye,” its 2011 fundraiser meant to encourage women to observe early breast cancer detection guidelines: At age 20, conduct monthly breast self-examination (BSE). At age 30, conduct monthly BSE and undergo a clinical breast examination (CBE) by a trained health worker every year. At age 40, continue monthly BSE, annual CBE and get a baseline mammogram.
