“We survivors have a shared sympathy and compassion.”

We each have a different reaction when we’re diagnosed with breast cancer. But no matter what our reaction towards the diagnosis is, or how we were affected, we feel for and understand each other as survivors. We understand how one is feeling or reacting. I say that cancer is like getting married or giving birth in the sense that you never really know what it is until you’ve gone through and experienced it.

Our family dealt with breast cancer before — my late aunt Consuelo “Chito” Madrigal had it, as did my younger sister, Tana, who sadly passed in 2013. The following year, I was diagnosed as well. But I believe that because of how Tana handled her prognosis, I decided to take immediate action.

My cancer was in its early stages when it was caught, but it wasn’t all easygoing. I had complications — I developed hematoma and had difficulty passing bowels. Still, I am grateful to God, and my doctors who saved me. The best part of my healing journey was my family who was with me all throughout.

I support ICanServe because its vision is aligned with how I want to help others. I decided to channel efforts towards trying to help save a life every year for people with breast cancer.

I set up the fund to help other patients because I was grateful I had the means to cure my cancer, so I wanted to extend that privilege to those going through the same, but who aren’t as blessed. These people are fierce warriors just the same, that’s why I call them my “cancer samurai.” I provide funding for one patient a year — one who has limited means — because I believe that every cancer patient deserves the full spectrum of care.

You should have a yearly check up with your doctor and, for those over 40, you should have a mammogram once a year.

For those battling cancer, keep a positive outlook and know that there are a lot of survivors in the world, and be diligent with your treatment
